Information about the
plight of the Tibetan people has now reached
critical mass and much of this awareness may be
attributable to the development and distribution of information
available on the World Wide Web.
Through volunteer
collaboration, Tibetech.org
develops websites
for Tibetans
Refugees and offers
technology education through on-site instruction and tuition assistance
programs.
As
Tibetan refugees become proficient in the use of
computers and the Internet, their
knowledge-base expands and improves available
resources.
For example, nuns may
now turn to the Internet for information on specific
questions such as sustainable agriculture, online
language translation programs, investigating
women's health issues, exploring online
medical and dental support (i.e. webmd.com, etc.) learning
about water safety, etc.
Telemedicine Support
(Medical assistance and diagnostic support via internet webcam) and Distance Learning Programs
(English as a Second Language taught via webcam)
will be further developed as technology skills and proficiency
increases.
Many
Tibetan refugees have escaped to other counties
from an occupied Tibet. Others have been born into exile. In either
circumstance, as refugees, their opportunities are
quite limited. Younger Tibetans escaping
into exile may be orphaned or are not able to
have further contact with their parents left behind
in Tibet. Many have been
victims of violence and exploitation such as rape,
forced sterilization, assault, robbery, brutality
and other heinous crimes against humanity.
Escaping into exile presents other tremendous
hardships and limited resources. The nunneries
and monasteries in exile accept many of these
refugees and are dependent upon the kind support of
the international community to help feed, house,
clothe and educate them.
International
exchanges through cyberspace demonstrates to the
Tibetan people that the global community values their
threatened culture. For example, learning about women in the West has opened windows of understanding for
nuns in exile. Many nuns, through cyberspace,
have begun to form deep and committed
relationships with international friends and
sponsors. Likewise, people
in the international community benefit deeply from
learning about the mystical and mysterious Tibetan
culture and the Tibetan people's practices for peace
and non violent social change.. In this we further bridge
the gap.
Educating Tibetan
refugees through technology while cultivating global
relationships
insures the survival of this precious culture.
